Private refiner Nayara Energy Ltd. has announced an unprecedented price hike for domestic petroleum coke (petcoke), effective November 1, 2026. The basic price Ex-Vadinar has been raised by a staggering ₹2,340 per metric tonne (PMT), moving sharply from ₹20,960 PMT in October to approximately ₹23,300 PMT.

This massive single-month adjustment marks the largest one-time price increase in recent years, pushing domestic petcoke to an all-time peak level across Indian markets.

What Is Driving This Record-Breaking Surge?

The historic leap to ₹23,300/MT reflects a confluence of tightening global energy matrices, international supply constraints, and peak regional industrial demand:

  1. Escalating Global Crude & Energy Pressures: Persistent international supply-chain frictions and tighter heavy-crude refining margins have driven up the cost of bottom-of-the-barrel petroleum fractions worldwide.

  2. Firming Seaborne Thermal Coal Parity: Global thermal coal benchmarks and ocean freight rates have remained firm into Q4, giving domestic refiners substantial room to elevate petcoke prices while retaining parity for industrial heating applications.

  3. Peak Industrial & Seasonal Offtake: Manufacturing sectors, cement plants, and mineral processing kilns across Western and Northern India are operating at intensive capacity levels heading into the winter quarter, driving robust spot demand.

Impact on Energy-Intensive & Mineral Processing Industries

As a primary high-calorific fuel utilized in rotary kilns, process boilers, and thermal dryers, this sharp price escalation directly impacts operational economics across multiple downstream sectors:

  • Lime & Cement Kilns: High-temperature calcination processes will face compounding input cost pressures, necessitating tight thermal efficiency management. Even the prices of Cement have risen in range of Rs. 15-25 per bag and may rise more.

  • Process Heating & Boilers: Industrial units running petcoke-fired systems—including chemical, textile, and mineral grinding plants across Rajasthan and Gujarat—will see an immediate rise in landed energy expenditure.

Market Outlook

The upward surge may continue in future driven by compounding global macro factors—including Middle East conflict tensions around Iran disrupting heavy-crude shipping corridors, shifts in US trade policies firming seaborne thermal coal benchmarks, and elevated bulk ocean freight rates—alongside strong post-monsoon domestic demand from lime, cement, and thermal processing kilns.
